Antigua Guatemala, sees first meeting of WACC's Executive Committee

WACC’s Executive Committee met in Antigua Guatemala, former capital of this Central American country. It took place 29 September to 1 October 2007.

Under WACC’s new governance structure, the Board of Directors meets once every three years. The Executive Committee, made up of WACC’s Officers plus one representative of each region, meets annually in between.

Members glimpsed Guatemalan reality in presentations by Ana Silvia Monzón on women, migration and communication and by Gustavo Berganza on media monitoring in relation to forthcoming political elections. They also had the opportunity of visiting the Mayan fortress of Iximche and of hearing about Mayan spirituality from local groups.

The Executive Committee approved WACC's Strategic Plan for 2008-2011, underlining its vision of a world in which communication is recognized by all as a human right and as the basis for peace and social justice.

The Executive Committee approved plans for WACC's Congress 2008 whose theme is Communication is Peace: Building viable communities. The committee called for accelerated promotion and publicity of the event.

Congress takes place in Cape Town, South Africa from October 6-10, 2008 and is expected to attract some 350 communicators, peace advocates and human rights activists from around the world. WACC’s Board of Directors will meet during Congress.
