Gender and Media Advocacy workshop
Over 35 gender and media experts from 13 countries in English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa are meeting in Nairobi, 3-5 December, to address stereotyped presentation of women in the media.
"Sex-disaggregated statistics on gender representation in news and journalistic practices in Sub-Saharan Africa demonstrate 'serious gender-based biases', said Gender and Media Justice programme manager for WACC, Sarah Macharia. This defines the challenges faced by activists working towards gender-responsive media in the region, she said.
WACC promotes communication for social change. It believes that communication is a basic human right that defines people's common humanity, strengthens cultures, enables participation, creates community and challenges tyranny and oppression.
